Mintheart padded into a small clearing, surrounded completely by clumps of trees and bushes and thick undergrowth. The smells of bracken and ferns and moss filled her mouth and nose, as well as the fresh scents of tasty prey---mice, squirrels, voles, shrews. Her mouth watered a little.
"Come on, Rosepaw!" she meowed back to her new apprentice. She wanted to teach some hunting techniques, and maybe a few battle moves if they could be squeezed in.

I ran silently after Mintheart. "I'm so excited! Are you going to teach me how to fight? Is there really prey here? Are you going to teach me how to hunt? When do you think I'll be as good as you? When will I attend my first gathering?" I hit her with a bucket of questions.

Mintheart chuckled at Rosepaw's eagerness. "We'll start off with fighting moves," she meowed. She crouched down. "This is the belly rake." To demonstrate, she sprang at Rosepaw and knocked her over; gently pawing at Rosepaw's stomach with claws sheathed. Then she got off the apprentice and let her up. "Now try it on me," she meowed, bracing herself.

My eyes flickered around. Hmm, where should I aim? I leaped at Mintheart randomly, hoping to at least unbalance her.
